Linear notes are good for preserving reading order. Research rarely develops in that order. New sources change earlier assumptions, one claim appears across several documents and a contradiction may become more important than the original question. A mind map gives those relationships a visible home.
Put the research question at the center
Use a question rather than a broad topic. "Remote work" invites a collection. "How does remote work affect onboarding time for small software teams?" creates boundaries for sources, evidence and conclusions.
Create a stable top-level structure
Start with five main branches: scope, sources, claims, evidence and gaps. The labels can change, but keeping source tracking separate from interpretation makes the map easier to audit.

Map sources before summarizing them
For each source, create a small branch with purpose, method, key finding, limitation and citation. This protects against a common mistake: remembering the finding while forgetting the conditions under which it was produced.
Connect claims to evidence
A claim should never float alone. Add child nodes for supporting evidence, conflicting evidence and caveats. If a claim has only one weak child, that weakness becomes visible before it reaches the final article or decision.
Color can show category. Labels should show meaning. Do not rely on color alone to communicate confidence or source quality.
Use AI for compression, then verify

Turn the map into an outline
Once the question is answered well enough, switch to a directional layout. Move the strongest claims into sequence, place evidence beneath each one and end with limitations and unresolved questions. The resulting structure can become a report outline without losing the source trail behind it.
